For anyone who has stumbled upon this blog...thank you for checking in! This blog is my scrapbook of just some of my appearances when I competed in the Miss America Program. You will see a lot of pictures and posts. I won over $40,000 in scholarships while competing in the Miss America Program. I was 3rd runner up one year and also won the Miss America Community Service Award and the Miss NH Community Service Award. I volunteered over 3,000 hours across NH and even made it to Washington D.C., Kentucky, and West Virginia for my platform. My life is now much different. I am a Registered Yoga Teacher and teach kids, adults and seniors. I love it! Life is good :)

I work at Sagamore Hampton Golf Club for my fun job to keep my life sane! I drive around the course with a cart full of snacks, bear, and soda....coolest job ever. All it takes is a fun personality and a BIG smile to get a golfers attention :)

So the other day I was working and served a group of 4 on my first time around...the second time around I waited patiently for the guys to finish up their putt. When they saw me one of the guys yelled "There's my Miss America".....it made me giggle for a second. So they came over to my cart and I said to them "how did you know I was a part of the Miss America Program"?? They said "whaaaaat! No way!" So I asked him why he said it and he said "because you look like Miss America"....what a nice guy! It's not every day you get someone who tells you you look like Miss America! Then I told them about the Miss NH Program and how I was Miss Manchester and they all wanted to take a picture with me with their blackberries. It was a fun day and made me smile!

I bought a surf board! I have always wanted to learn how to surf since I was in middle school. I remember going to Florida one year for a family vacation when I was younger and I made my parents stop into the Ron Jon Surf Shop and bought a rash guard shirt even though I didn't surf. When I was in high school one of my friends let me borrow a board and I took a few lessons from Cinnamon Rainbows in North Hampton. Through out college I went with some of my girlfriends and finally I bought one! I have a 7ft 3in Bic board totally for beginners! The board is indestructible and a great board to start out on. May 11, 2010 Salvation Army Appreciation Dinner

I was blessed to be invited to the Salvation Army Appreciation Dinner. I have been volunteering for them for the past 5 years at the Salvation Army in Manchester for their annual toy shop.

The Salvation Army's Toy Shop is designed to assist needy families with gifts and a food voucher for the holiday season. Through our assistance program; we are able to assure that all children will receive at least four presents to open on Christmas morning and that everyone in the household will be able to share in a special meal that day. Given that we serve nearly 4,000 children from birth to age 15, we must buy in large quantities and focus on traditional gifts such as board games, trucks, cars and other toys that have general appeal for a particular age group. Toy drives are greatly appreciated because they provide families with a broader range of gifts from which to choose. The age group for gifts that are most needed, range from 11-15. The Toy Shop last year provided gifts to over 1,000 families.

I am now certified in the First Degree and Second Degree of Reiki through Usui Shiki Ryoho. I received my certification through Hannelore Moebius, Reiki Master from the Prana Studio for Yoga and Health. I am not able to practice Reiki!

Reiki is an ancient healing art, which was rediscovered in Japan in the early 1900's by Dr. Mikao Usui. The Usui-System of Reiki initiation reawaken and reopen the channels with in us. The healing energy channels through the crown of my head passing through the upper energy centers into the heart center. From there it flows through the arms and hands into one self for self-healing, or into the receiver's body.

Talent Son of a Preacher Man

Costume made by AJ! I loved my costume. I told AJ I wanted something sexy and red for my talent costume. That same day he sent me a sketch of this very costume. When it was made after my final fitting I put the costume on and began to cry. I LOVED IT! I've never worked with a designer who is so amazing. He is so much fun and puts his all into his designs. I was a bit nervous about it at first but the final product is always breath taking. I felt like a professional singer on Friday night and totally rocked it. I love singing and that performance was something I had been waiting to do at Miss NH for years! I'm glad I finally got the opportunity to entertain at Miss NH! I loved every second on that stage after all I only got 2 minutes :)

Thank you to my mom and dad for not only supporting me but going on this 5 year journey of Miss NH! Not only is it stressful for the contestant but it's stressful for the parents. When my name wasn't called for the top 10 this year I wanted to just go over and see them. I held it together while I was on stage mainly because I was in shock and disbelief. I could see my parents faces too they were pretty close to the front. They said they held hands through it. My parents didn't chose this pageant life I did and I thank them for following me and always supporting me. It's rough and not easy. My mom always helped with my bake sales and my dad always helped me get ready for interview.

My dad loves politics and anything to do with debating! He likes to be right too. He was fun source to talk to about anything in the news, he always knew the answer. He's very knowledgeable about everything really. Current events, wars, history, local news, global news. I was challenged a lot when we talked. He always helps with technical things like pictures and printing things off the computer. He helps make signs for my bake sales and whatever I need to go into class rooms and autograph cards. So I'm not going to lie pageant life was BRUTAL my first year. I suck at directions and luckily I had my dad to help. I had a car with multiple problems and GPS's weren't even invented yet I don't think (that's how ancient I am). I spent a lot of car rides in tears because I was lost on the way to an appearance but my dad always walked me through it over the cell phone with his map skills. He always helps with car issues too. Changing head lights, filling my tires, making sure I have a car jumper battery, safety kit, and mace just in case. Ohh dad! So 5 years later I have a GPS and still get lost and I still have him to call so life is good.

My mom always knows the right thing to do and it continues to amaze me. If I am running late she'll make me breakfast to go. If I need help with something she just knows and can tell what I need and just does it with out me even asking. If I need help bringing stuff down to my car she will help and ask my dad to help too. She accepts my million phone calls while she's at work. Does research on things I need help with when preparing for interview. She's just thoughtful and always knows what I'm doing. She wishes me luck and asks how things went.

My parents have been great through this whole journey but I think we are all happy it's over. We had fun while it lasted but we are all ready to move on. Having to hold it together after your kid isn't called for the top 10 is probably one of the worst feelings in the world. This was the first year where they didn't have any suggestions, any helpful criticism because everything was perfect so not being in the top 10 was just crazy. This was the first year I wasn't stressed out for ANYTHING. It was go time I had fun and rocked every phase of competition with grace and sexiness. It would be one thing if I couldn't sing, or if I was out of shape, if I fell, if I didn't practice, if I wasn't ready, if I was hideous, if I wore an ugly gown, but none of that is true. The judges were nuts end of story. NUTS I tell you....NUTS phew I feel much better :)

Marathon!

My sister ran in the Boston Marathon for the first time and finished at 4 hours and 37 minutes. She didn't even look tired while she was running. My dad and mom maped out the course and we went to about 5 different stops to watch her run. I think we were about as exhausted as she was with all the driving, in the car, out of the car, find a spot! It was crazy. Jess finished great and looked like she had fun. I think she was in a little bit of pain but not too bad. We finished the night off at Boston Beerworks for a delicious blueberry beer and great food! It was a fun day. Congrats Jess for finishing :)

I won the two awards I have ALWAYS dreamed of winning and it was perfect. This was my 5th year competing for Miss New Hampshire and every year it has been my goal not only to win Miss NH but to walk away with the community service awards.
Well this year I did not win Miss NH but I won the Miss America Community Service Award AND the Miss New Hampshire Meg Geraghty Memorial Community Service Award. I walked away with $4,000 in scholarships which is phenomenal! These two awards meant the world to me and to me represent more than the title of Miss New Hampshire ever could.

The Meg Geraghty Memorial Community Service Award is awarded to the contestant whose community service resume reflects a broad and diverse set of volunteer efforts. This contestant will have worked extensively throughout her community on a variety of community service projects on a volunteer basis. Meg Served for many years as the ED of the Miss NH Program, during the Union Leader's 54 year sponsorship of the program. Mrs. Geraghty was the "Family Page" editor in the newspaper until she retired in the late 1980's. She passed away in June of 2007. The award comes with a $1,000 Scholarship.

I spent hours putting my book together! I had to write about every volunteer effort I did and submit 12 pages of supporting documents like letters and pictures. I am honored to receive both of these awards as it represents my commitment to my platform and service. I love what I do! I am so happy I was able to serve as Miss Manchester and guess what I still have appearances! It's not over yet.

I wanted to take some time to thank my director Debbie St. Hilaire! I don't even know where to begin. From the day that I won Miss Manchester Debbie has been so supportive and so exciting to work with. She is fun and really represents what this program is all about. I talked with her and texted just about every day since January 2nd. She has been beyond helpful! We spent days on my paperwork at her house and shared great conversations and lots of food! She even introduced Greek Yogurt to me (so good). She literally poured her heart into me because she wanted me to do well. She spent hours of her own time searching for the perfect gown, the perfect hair styles, the perfect swim suit and much more. I was amazed by how much she wanted me to do well! We had a commitment to each other and that was to do our best, have no regrets, and be FEARLESS.

When it came time to chose my talent it was such a hard decision. I think we spent over 10 hours on youtube alone looking for a song. You should have seen her list of potential songs for me......the woman was so into it!!!! I finally came to the conclusion. I was sitting in the parking lot after an appearance at Girls Inc and my voice teacher said on the phone to me: If you do the same thing you did last year you will get the same result, do something different, don't play it safe! Then he said If you always do what you've always done you'll always be what you've always been. TRUE so I decided to be fearless and take a chance with Son of a Preacher Man....I had so much fun with the song.

The song was a Bill Wolfe arrangement and Bill Wolfe makes Miss America's! I had such a fun time working with the song and learning it. I felt so strong vocally and fearless emotionally. I sang my little heart out for 2 minutes at Miss NH, worked the stage, worked the crowd and was happy with my performance. DEBBIE: we picked an amazing song!

So she also spent hours with me at the mall looking for a swimsuit....I can't tell you how much she means to me. She really went over the commitment of a director and made me a part of her life. We literally talked every day. She saw me happy and she saw me sad she saw me from all sides and know's just exactly who I am!

Congratulations to Debbie for being an amazing director and friend and helping me do my best. The judges didn't like me that day but I was hot and on a different day with different judges I could have been the girl with the sparkly crown in the end.

I also want to thank Debbie's sister Lea Glickman for all her help as well! She came along to many appointments and helped with many things to help get me ready for Miss NH so thank you to Lea too!

I had so much fun today at Miss NH!!!! I competed in gown and swimsuit and did my best. I hit all my dance moves...which trust me is a huge accomplishment! I am not the best dancer but I pulled it off some how. I was so excited to see my yoga class mates at the show too. Just to see how proud everyone is of me makes me smile. My Nanny was waving her little arm off to get my attention. I am so thankful for all the friends and family that came tonight. I hope everyone comes back tomorrow night to see my talent. I am SO excited! I'll update you tomorrow night!

Very Cool Results!

Thank you Josh at Training Effects and Rocco and Tom at Integrity! I started off at Integrity in September to prepare for Miss Manchester at 28% body fat and got down to 15%...Then I started training with Josh for Miss NH starting on March 29th. I focused and trained hard and ate clean and am now down to 7.6% body fat which is craziness. I lost inches and gained inches all where I needed to! It's cool to see results. Hard work pays off! Thank you Josh for getting me in the best shape of my life you were so much fun to work with!

Josh St. Ours, a Certified Personal Trainer at Training Effects, received a Bachelor's Degree in Applied Health and Fitness from Plymouth State University. He is the newest trainer at Training Effects. He is working one-on-one training and with the sports programs. He is from Auburn, New Hampshire. Josh participated in two sports in college: rugby as well as wrestling where he was the team captain.

4/14/2010 Taste of the Nation Manchester: a huge success

I had so much fun at the Taste of the Nation tonight! Above you will see I took some pictures with sponsors and friends! I arrived at the Radisson Hotel in Manchester and helped with registration for the majority of the night! I helped check in the VIPs and the General Admission ticket holders. We were busy for the first half of the night and then I was able to walk around the event to thank the restaurant chefs and beverage vendors for volunteering. This whole event is volunteer based and there were over 80 food and beverage sponsors that donated their time food and drinks to the event to raise money for the NH Food Bank! It was a successful night and everyone had a fun time! I was also able to thank some of the patrons of the event and encouraged them to come back and enjoy the food next year. It was an honor to be a part of such a great event. I also saw Emily Heubner, she works in Washington D.C. for Share Our Strength and comes to all of the NH Taste of the Nation Events.

Travel Day 1 and 2 Christian Appalachian Project Alternative Spring Break

Arriving at Nazareth Farm in West Virginia and sleeping over at the farm! We at dinner at an amazing burrito place called the Black Bear. They had an amazing bluegrass band that was playing and we got to meet up with our friends Becky and Tim from last years ASB from West Virginia University! The next day we woke up and drove the rest of the way to Kentucky! We arrived in Flatgap Kentucky at about 3 and saw our living quarters.....it consisted of bunks wood walls and a tiny little "heater". It came with spiders and a crack under the door about an inch and a half all the way across. Yes it scared the crap out of me but at least I had a place to sleep that was somewhat warm. Also we got our home assignments and I was assigned to Sheila! I was so excited to meet her!

Homeowner Story #2 from Kentucky CAP

This is the Homeowner my group was paired with. This is Sheila! She is an amazing woman. You will hear how thankful she is for CAP! I had so much fun getting to know her through out the week. Every time we were tired of working we were encouraged to go into the house and talk with Sheila and her family. She had a lot to talk about let me tell you! She was so happy to have us all there and to have new windows and doors will save her a lot of money in the winter with heating. We also built her a porch which she is so excited about because she is light sensitive and hates going outside so this porch makes going outside enjoyable! Hear what she has to say!

My Trip to Kentucky Homeowner Story VERY TOUCHING

I hope you get a chance to listen to this video and read along. This filming was from the last day of the students working on the homeowners work site. I came in half way through but the woman was saying that she didn't know what she was going to do and then she heard of the Christian Appalachian Project (CAP)! CAP helps people with a low income repair their homes. They do all of the work for free and charge a small amount for supplies. She spoke about the process and where she comes in she says "But I got it" that means she was approved by CAP to have the home repair. What a touching story listen!

But I got it and it needed work on only one income ______
If it wasn’t for last week and this week I don’t know what I woulda done
Because in the winter I had to put plastic on every winda and my back door
I heat with gas and It’s hard on me
But now I won’t be able to put plastic around none a my windas or my back door no more

I had the opportunity to sing for the seniors in the Adult Day Care Program at the Rockingham County Nursing home. I had so much fun singing for them and talking with them for the day. The man you see holding my hand began to cry during the last sing along to God Bless America.

I have a great personal trainer! His name is Josh and he is from Training Effects in Londonderry. At the Miss NH Golf Tournament I put a bid on a personal training package at Training Effects and got it! It was a good buy! I was assigned to Josh for 3 personal training sessions and 3 nutrition sessions. He's been kicking my little butt into gear and let me tell you it hurts! He has given me some good guidelines as to what to eat and after our 3 times together he agreed to continue to help me. I see Josh twice a week at the gym. We have a lot of fun together.

I have also been doing yoga every day. I practice yoga on Tuesday nights at the Brentwood Rec with Mina, two times a week at Blue Moon, and then I see Hannelore every Wednesday night for Yoga Nidra meditation and relaxation, the other nights of the week I do Yoga OnDemand with some cute girls on TV. It's been a lot of fun, however I've been walking a bit crooked from all the pain I'm in! It's good pain though, I promise :)

I went from 28% body fat in September to 15% body fat now. Cut in half is pretty good! Those numbers are proof that getting in shape doesn't happen over night it takes time, effort, patience, and dedication. I am thankful for all my yoga friends and Josh for helping me be successful.

If you were wondering 28% body fat is considered obese so for the record I was obese at one point in life.

National Nutrition Month Exeter Public Library 2pm group! 3/24/2010

I had so much fun reading to the last group at the Exeter Public Library! March is National Nutrition Month and as a member of the New Hampshire Dietetics Association I was able to read to three different groups in Exeter. I read a book called The Vegetables We Eat and we talked about the different colors of vegetables and what vegetables they like to eat! After we read together we colored a worksheet of different veggies! I also had a hand out for the family to bring home with healthy snacks that are kid friendly! We had a great time.

I was at the Exeter Public Library at 10am reading to some of the cutest kids in Exeter! For story time I read The Vegetables We Eat! It was interresting to see when I asked the kids what their favorite vegetable was I heard little voices scream with excitement! Carrots! Broccoli! Celery! Green Beans! Strawberries! Kids 5 and under are still learning the difference between fruits and vegetables, names of fruits and vegetables, and colors at this age. It was a great opportunity to make a difference in the kids lives by talking about different fruits and vegetables, how they grow, what kind of vegetable they are, and their color! After we read the book everyone knew that eggplants were purple! Mission accomplished they learned something! After we read together we colored a worksheet full of veggies.

Getting into the Boston Children's Hospital as a volunteer is a challenge! They have rules and regulations that make it hard to volunteer for just one day. After leaving a few messages Christopher Alexander, the program coordinater for the Reach Out Read program called me and asked me to come in to read to the children. I was so excited! I went in with four of my favorite children's books and sat in the waiting room at the CMN and read to he kids all day. They have a big library there for the kids to pick books as well.

I leave for Kentucky on Saturday with the UNH crew. We will be building houses while we are there. I am so excited to go! Thank you to ACE Hardware in Raymond for sponsoring my gear! I find giving back to the community through service is rewarding and fulfilling. When Cathy from ACE Hardware heard I was shopping for my alternative spring break for Christian Appalachian Project she decided to pay it forward and offer me quite a nice discount on my gear. It was an unexpected bonus that I am appreciative for and I will definitely have to share some photos of the Carhartt gear hard at work hammering, sawing, and helping build a community. As Miss Manchester I helped at the NH State Home Show held at the Radisson Expo Center in Manchester! They hosted a food drive that I helped at for two of the days. I was able to help collect the food and sell tickets for the event. With a canned good the public got a $2.00 off their admission. Together the state of NH collected 19,969 POUNDS OF FOOD. Great job New Hampshire!

I have been a volunteer the Oxfam Student Org for the past 4 years at UNH. It is a group that really makes a difference in the community!

The Oxfam America Hunger Banquet event provides an opportunity to educate the public on hunger issues and raise funds to support Oxfam's poverty-fighting work.

Guests at the event draw tickets at random that assign them each to either a high-, middle-, or low-income tier and receive a corresponding meal. The 15 percent in the high-income tier are served a sumptuous meal sitting at a table with full settings and service. The 35 percent in the middle-income section eat a simple meal of rice and beans while sitting on chairs and no table. The 50 percent in the low-income tier help THEMSELVES to small portions of rice and water that comes in one big pot with out utensils...oh and they have to sit on the floor. Finally, all guests are invited to share their thoughts after the meal.
After an Oxfam America Hunger Banquet event, few participants leave with full stomachs, but all possess a greater understanding of the problems of hunger and poverty and will hopefully be motivated to do something about them.

What a day! Breakfast was busy busy at IHOP in Newington. I was able to help sell balloons in the morning to benefit the Children's Miracle Network. IHOP was doing a promotion where it was free pancake day and then people had the option to donate to CMN. I can't wait to see how much we raised today. I was there for Breakfast and Dinner and they looked like they got a lot of donations, I am going to guess over $8,000!!!! I can't wait to hear the news. By the way how cute are these kids!! The Saint Vincent De Paul's Food Pantry in Exeter was in full force tonight. They were open from 7-8pm and the waiting area was full. I went to volunteer and drop off some bread products from Panera's operation donation program. Miss Granite State Merrimack Valley had a bunch of Panera Bread products left over so they gave them to me to donate to the Pantry. It went to good use. The smell of bagels lit up the faces of many. One woman was so excited that her kids would be able to have bagels for breakfast in the morning! She said it was a real treat. I'm glad the people took things home.

I'm so excited to go to Kentucky for 7 days!!! It is my goal in life to do volunteer work in as many states as I can....I have a lot of years to live so I have plenty of time! I am going with UNHers :) from St. Thomas More and some of my friends from last years mission trip to West Virginia are going again and I am sooo excited! I need to raise $250 for the trip. It is with the Christian Appalachian Project and we will be staying in cabins, eating good food, and working hard all day. Girl Scout Conference hosted by Chantel McCabe Miss Keene February 21, 2010

Today I had so much fun with the Girl Scouts! Chantel McCabe who is Miss Keene hosted the event at the Henry Moore Elementary School in Candia NH. Chantel's platform for the Miss NH Competition is Girl Scouts: Growing with Courage, Confidence and Character! It's a great platform and she is very passionate about it which makes it very easy to support her mission! Oh...and did I mention she gave us girl scout cookies! My favorite are Thin Mints and Simoas ...yep that's what kind she gave us!

My seminar was called Make it Eat it! The girls got the badge for learning about nutrition and cooking. I think just about everyone in the room tried the pancakes...they were really good. We made Whole Wheat Banana Pancakes. Thank you to Chantel for organizing the event and to her mother Linda for helping her with the location! it was very beneficial to the younger girls in the NH Community and to the older girls as well. I was joined by Rebecca, Lissa, MC, Krystal, Bess, and Jenn. We had a lot of fun!

Thank you to Marion Murray for asking me to host a Bake Sale at Miss Keene KS Valley! There was a big team that she helped put together to bake. We raised $75 for the Community Kitchen Inc and Margaret came to accept the donation. The show was great and Chantel McCabe is the new Miss Keene and Lauren Gorgol is the new Miss Kearsarge Valley! They both looked stunning and I am so excited they will be at Miss NH with me again this year.

Community Dinner at St. Thomas More February 12, 2010

I had so much fun with the UNH students cooking at St. Thomas More on Campus for the Community Dinner. There were over 15 volunteers that helped make dinner. We got had carrots, sweet potatoes, cabbage, and beats fresh from the UNH Organic Garden and another local farm. My job was washing peeling and cutting the carrots....what a task! We were making sweet potato burritos and they ended up being delicious. My friend Thais joined us for dinner and I saw a lot of familiar faces from when I was a student and met a lot of new students. Community dinners are a great way to meet new people and to share the joy of cooking. You would be surprised at how much some students know about cooking and how much some students don't know!!! Example.....once you take beans out of the can you need to was the gritty mess off them! Something my mom taught me at some point in life. Something I learned was how to make red velvet cake with beats! Pretty neat to eat local foods year round, I bet you didn't know you can grow carrots in the winter in NH- well you can! SWEET :)

Good News someone found some my things! A man who works for the DOT found two things on 93. Bad news I didn't realize all that was gone. First I forgot my checkbook was in my bag that's how the man found my number to call me. Second the man found my crown box. One problem.............the crown wasn't in it! The sash and little pillow were there but not the crown! What are they going to do with the crown????? Makes me so mad! I am thankful that some of my things were found. Last night when I got home I talked to myself for a good hour before I went to bed about how I thought it would show up somewhere. Luckily it did. Let's wait until I actually pick the bags up until we get too excited. Stay Positive. The Ipod and Crown are still missing and I'm not sure what else but I will shortly know!

Glass of America will come tomorrow to fix my window so I can drive my car again with out freezing my face off.

I'm venting about my run in with the 3rd Yama: Asteya

Every month I write an Essay for Yoga school and for January 17th I wrote about the word Asteya.

"Asteya is the third yama and is commonly known as honesty or abstinence from theft. Acknowledging what is truly yours and being content with that is a struggle for a lot of people. People have a hard time being content with what they have." ~Alicia

Right after I wrote this essay I ran into the word Asteya right after coming out of the mall of NH on January 19th. My passenger side window was smashed in and I had 2 things stolen out of my car.

I had my work bag stolen with my work clothes, a beautiful scarf from my aunt, my book to study to be a CPT, ALL my note cards and notes that I have spent hours on, my Ipod Touch (which is my bible for telling me where I need to be and when it's mainly my planner). SO SAD!

At first I was angry because they broke my window, then I was angry because they stole something that WASN'T a purse, and then I was sad when I realized what was gone. When I realized they took my scarf that my aunt got for me I began to cry. It meant so much to me.

I am sorry for those who feel the need to take things from others. I am lucky that nothing happened physically to me and that they did not take more from my car. I practically live out of my car-you name it-it's in there- I'm the "Just in Case Girl"!

"When following asteya we should try not to be greedy, instead we should try to be happy with what we have, how we are, where we live, where we went to school, who our friends are, the car we drive, the jewelry we have, the husband we have etc."

"Good things will come your way if you are genuine, kind, and giving. Each time you stray away try to think of Asteya."

I hope that the people who took my things have a safe place to stay and at some point I hope they realize that what they did was not cool and it really hurt my trust for others. They most likely didn't get hugged as a child, or read to, and their mom probably didn't make up stories every night about the bubble gum fairy like my mom did. Some day they will grow up and realize what they did was wrong. I hope they enjoy my ipod it's got a lot of AKON on it!!!

I drove home with a window open at the end of the snow storm, I was freezing and couldn't put my gloves on because they were covered with glass.

MARTIN LUTHER KING FOOD DRIVE KICKS OFF DECEMBER 28TH

CONCORD, NH – In an effort to carry the spirit of goodwill into the new year, Volunteer NH announces the statewide Martin Luther King Food Drive which will run from December 28, 2009, through January 15, 2010. Food collected during this time will follow the holiday seasonal food drives and help replenish dwindling supplies at local pantries throughout the state.

The MLK Food Drive is one of hundreds of activities that cities and states throughout the country are organizing to honor Dr. King’s legacy of service. This initiative is a partnership among Volunteer NH, United Ways of NH, Senior Corps, AmeriCorps, and local organizations and businesses that are hosting food collection sites.

Food assistance donation programs are facing increased demand and pressure as more people seek help during the holidays and year-round. During its first year of operation, 2-1-1 NH, the statewide information and referral service, fielded 987 calls related to food assistance. Food was the most-often searched subject on www.211nh.org from June 2008 to June 2009.

“The needs of New Hampshire citizens have increased and unfortunately donations to food pantries have declined,” said Volunteer NH’s Executive Director Tim Dupre. “The Martin Luther King Food Drive offers an opportunity for New Hampshire’s strong volunteer base and compassionate citizens to overcome this challenge and combat hunger in the Granite State.” With over 60,000 people seeking food assistance in New Hampshire each year, it is clear that hunger doesn’t stop after the holidays.

Miss Manchester 2010!

3) Thank you to the 5 people who decided that I could do the job of Miss Manchester
4) I was in the paper twice in 2010 and it's only been 3 days!!! How COOL

Ok so I say it's go time because now that I am Miss Manchester the count down starts for Miss NH 2010! I am so excited for the competition and to be a part of such an amazing production. The moment Jamie Staton says "This is it" (or something along those lines) and the music pounds and I remember my first dance moves (yes it takes a lot of concentration) my heart pounds and I can't wait to hear the crowd cheer! It's such a good feeling something that's hard to describe.

So really as we all know different day different judges different winner. It could be anyone and I really thank those 5 judges for everything. It's going to be a great year. I have already thought about what I can do in the Manchester area! Did you know the NH FOOD BANK is in MANCHESTER...how perfect! I woke up yesterday to an email from Melanie Gosselin, the ED of the NH Food Bank wishing me luck and thanking Kelsey and me for our donation. She said "It's the work that our community does that makes what we do possible."

I woke up today with an email from Michele Garron the Operations Manager of the NH Food Bank she wanted to congratulate me on winning Miss Manchester and she said: "If you need any support from the NH Food Bank please let me know and again thank you for your continued support of our program. I am sure with your talent and dedication you will go far!"

These two women have really done great work at the Food Bank. As far as I am concerned we have the hardest working staff in all of America. We have a garden which produces fresh food to be distributed to food pantries across the state, we have a beautiful kitchen that is a job training facility, check out their website it's just amazing what they have done.

It is nice to know that after four long and hard years of working for the Food Bank they truly believe in me, support me, and know that the work I have done has been because I love to do it!

I am thankful for the opportunity to work in the Manchester Community, to work with Debbie to prepare for Miss NH, and thankful for one last chance to be Miss New Hampshire.

EXETER — Two local girls have teamed up to fight hunger with Share Our Strength (SOS) and the New Hampshire Food Bank.

Alicia Rossman of Brentwood, a 22-year-old University of New Hampshire graduate with a nutritional sciences degree, and Kelsey MacDonald, a sophomore at Exeter High School, have been working together to make a difference in their New Hampshire community by hosting Great American Bake Sales around the Seacoast and donating the money to SOS and the NH Food Bank.

They have hosted bake sales at the Exeter Concert Series on Swasey Parkway, at Timberland, and at the Stratham Fair — just to name a few.

In the past four years, the girls have raised close to $6,000 for both organizations.

The girls recently helped the NH Food Bank meet a goal of matching $100,000 to earn $100,000 from the Trustees of the Madelaine G. Von Weber Trust in just 10 days. Rossman and MacDonald delivered a check for $300.

The girls thank the team of over 20 bakers who helped them throughout the process as well as local businesses and bakeries and stress that the NH Food Bank is always in need. To learn more, visit www.nhfoodbank.org.

Salvation Army Toy Shop

with Kelsey MacDonald at the Salvation Army Toy Shop 12/23/2009. We are joined by Bob and Paul! Kelsey and I volunteered at the Radisson at the Expo Center in Manchester where we were paired up with parents who needed help getting presents for their children. The parents were able to pick 3 toys for each child they also got to pick out stocking stuffers, socks, hats and gloves, underwear, tooth brushes, and at the end they got a gift card from Hannafords to buy their family a meal for Christmas. It was a very rewarding day! Kelsey and I had a lot of fun.

NH Food Bank Donation

Donating a $300.00 check with Kelsey MacDonald! The donation will be matched by the Madelaine G. Von Weber Trust. The NH Food Bank was challenged to raise $100,000 and the Trust would match it. Kelsey and I held Great American Bake Sales over the summer and raised $600 which we donated half to Share Our Strength and the other half to the NH Food Bank!

Operation Frontline

Operation Frontline is now over at the New Outlook Teen Center in Exeter. The kids had a lot of fun and everyone graduated from the program. It was sad to leave and I will miss the kids. At the last class we made vegetable lasagna, baked mozzarella sticks, a green salad, and they had chocolate covered fruit and dried fruit.

I've never actually been to a Patriots game to watch...I've always gone to volunteer. This Sunday I will be at the game! I am so excited and after work I will be on my way to get hand and foot warmers- it's going to be cold!

First time Teaching

Yesterday was my first time getting a taste of teaching Yoga! Ruth teaches a class at UNH to the students so we know each other and she also knew that I was in yoga school. At the end of class Ruth asked me if I would go through a sun salutation with the class. There were about 50 students in the class, and I was a little bit nervous but how could I say no? It was so much fun and I did pretty well. She said she would give me the opportunity to teach again. It was a great experience.

Cooking Video

The other day I tried to enter a contest through WMUR news 9. It was a contest to submit a cooking video and have the chance to appear on cooks corner and to have the dessert on the Common Man's Dessert Menu and have a portion of the profit go to the NH Food Bank. I had a lot of fun making the video! I learned how hard it is and how long it takes to actually film something and then edit it. Unfortunatly my video didn't upload to WMUR's website on time. I couldn't even get it to upload. I hope they do the competition again next year so I can just use my recipe from this year.

Miss Rockingham County Scholarship Program

Last weekend I had the opportunity to compete in Miss Rockingham County. I won a lot of scholarship money that will help me pay off my loans! I won talent, evening gown, peoples choice award, the community service award, and there was a 3-way tie for interview. I won over $2,500 in scholarship and was first runner up. This was my first time in all 5 years of competing that I was able to compete in Miss Rockingham County. The next program I will compete in is Miss Manchester. Training started November 30th.....I needed at least one day off :)
